LEVEL 1 — HOUNSI

The First Return, The Opening of the Road, The Child of the Lakû

A Hounsi is not a title. It is a beginning. It is the moment a spirit decides, “Yes, you may enter.”

It is the point where your old life loosens its grip, and something ancient inside you begins to wake up.

A Hounsi is the first breath of the house. The first rhythm. The first step into remembering who you are.

This level teaches you to stand without shaking, to listen without interrupting, to move without ego, and to serve without expectation.

It is not glamorous. It is not loud. It is a quiet, powerful, internal rearranging of the soul.

THE SPIRITUAL ESSENCE OF A HOUNSI

At Level 1, you become a spiritual child of the Lakou. You learn:

A Hounsi is the root, not the branch. You do not carry titles; you receive instructions. You do not lead; you observe. You do not speak loudly; you listen deeply.

This level begins shaping you into someone the spirits can trust.

DRESS CODE OF A HOUNSI

Clothing carries spiritual meaning. How you present yourself reflects how you respect the spirits.

In the Lakou, Hounfò, or Badji:

As a Hounsi, you represent order.
Your clothing should reflect discipline, humility, and reverence.

DAILY PROTOCOL OF A HOUNSI

Becoming Hounsi is not a weekend practice.
It is daily. Every day you practice:

Spiritual Hygiene

  • Morning cleansing
  • Grounding rituals
  • Speaking to your ancestors
  • Lighting your Work Candle before assignments
  • Observing your own emotions

Keeping Your Personal Space Clean

Your room, your altar, your body, your clothes—
all must remain aligned with spiritual order.

Participation in Morning Meditations

Shared daily in the class WhatsApp group, between 5 AM–12 PM.

Learning the Basics of Spiritual Work

You begin learning:

  • how to fold white cloths correctly
  • how to prepare simple offerings
  • how to refresh water for spirits
  • how to cleanse a space
  • how to prepare your Work Candle setup
  • how to manage spiritual tools respectfully

These are the seeds that will grow into advanced ritual practice later.

CEREMONY PROTOCOL FOR A HOUNSI

Ceremony is where your real training happens.

Observe in Silence

You learn by watching:

  • how the altar is opened
  • how offering bowls are placed.
  • how drums call spirits
  • how possession moves through a room
  • how the Manbo/Houngan commands order

Stay Present

You do not wander.
Your focus is part of your offering.

Follow Directions Immediately

When the elders call your name… you move.

Protect the Space

Even as a beginner, you help maintain:

  • silence
  • flow
  • respect
  • direction

You support the rhythm of the house by supporting the order of the ceremony.

DISCIPLINE AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF A HOUNSI

Your responsibilities include:

  • attending ceremonies
  • participating in rituals
  • completing weekly assignments
  • contributing to altars

THE INNER TRANSFORMATION OF A HOUNSI

Your responsibilities include:

  • attending ceremonies
  • participating in rituals
  • completing weekly assignments
  • contributing to altars
  • presenting your ritual setups
  • sending before/after candle photos
  • keeping your spiritual tools ready
  • journaling your experiences

This level shapes your character. It matures your emotions. It strengthens your spiritual backbone.

WHY THIS LEVEL IS SACRED

Because Level 1 is the foundation. A house without foundation collapses. A priest without humility destroys a community.
A spiritual path without discipline becomes chaos. Hounsi is where you build:

  • spiritual stamina
  • emotional maturity
  • personal order
  • ancestral connection
  • devotion
  • alignment with Ginen

If you cannot honor Level 1, you cannot carry Levels 2–5.

This level teaches you how to enter the road. The next levels teach you how to walk it.

HOW LEVEL 1 PREPARES YOU FOR LEVEL 2

Hounsi prepares you to become Hounsi Vodounvi,
where your training deepens,
your responsibilities increase,
